Mathematics and Physics in the World of Sound
Spherical Harmony, Overtones, Fourier Series
– The Harmony of Physics, Mathematics, and Music
Mathematics and physics in the world of sound: on the sound systems of antiquity to Johannes Kepler, who let the planets ring, or the alleged hidden messages in Bach's compositions – the mathematical, physical, and musical journey through the centuries shows how very close these two disciplines meet each other. Composers of the Middle Ages and the Baroque period used mathematical methods just like modern composers do today. On the 6th NIGHT OF THE PROFS, organized by Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz at the Mainz State Theater, scholars and artists will present and explain the secrets of overtones, Fourier series, and spherical harmony.
Organizer: Institute of Mathematics, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz
Admission is free. Registration is not required.
There are short breaks between lectures.
